Spleen venting

Thu Jan 9, 2003, 6:36 AM
OK, I have something to say. First let me say that I love deviantart and all who sail in her, but there's something that really pisses me off.

Most people who post here are serious about their work, and clearly submit it because they want to improve, and to prove themselves in a public forum. It's admirable, and what makes the whole place so rich. However, there seems to be a fear in the comments - no one's prepared to stick their necks out and say when they don't like something.

Don't believe me? Take a trawl through all the photographs, even the ones you wouldn't normally look at, and try and find a "Don't like deviation" vote, or even "somewhat like deviation". Not all that easy, is it?

Now, I'm not advocating a wholesale slaughter of bad art - What I am asking is the people leave constructive criticism. I submit not just for praise, but for constructive comment, be it praise or criticism. So, next time you're about to walk away from something you don't like, have a think, and tell the author why you don't like it. Make an effort - this is more than just a gallery. Don't just criticise, suggest ares for improvement. Similarly, if you like something, try and give a personal reason why. What touches you about it? Does the sense of balance confirm to your idea of a perfect world? Does it's selective but flawed viewpoint reflect our view of the reality? People have gone to a lot of trouble to create these works - it is my opinion that they deserve more than "Wow, man. Nice colours."

Right, rant over. I know, I've left myself open for a world of abuse, but if it helps me to improve even a small amount, then I'm happy. This is playground for talent, not for a fragile ego.

Have you ever had a dream, that you were so sure was real? What if you were unable to wake from that dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?

What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire deviant life, that there's something wrong with the story. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. Your browser closes and you believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland. And, I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I offer only the truth, nothing more.
